Submersible pumps for sending sewage effluent, waste water and stormwater to the sewer main or an effluent field

How to select a submersible pump for sending sewage effluent, waste water and stormwater to the sewer main or an effluent field

Are all submersible pumps capable of pumping both sewage effluent and stormwater?

No

How do I distinguish between the two?

For stormwater choose a Drainage Pump, for sewage effluent choose a Vortex Pump or a Cutter and Grinder Pump.

Which model do I choose?

This depends on the head - a combination of the pipe diameter, distance to be pumped and how much it rises over the distance. So the calculate the total head we add the vertical (static) head to the horizontal head. To calculate the horizontal head, for every 100 metres distance, add 2.5 metres of head. So if it is 20 metres horizontally, the add 0.5 metres to the static head.

Selection process example:

  1. How much does the pump have to deliver vertically? Answer3 metres
  2. How much does the pump have to deliver horizontally? Answer 50 metres

Total head then becomes 3 metres plus 1.25 metres = 4.25 metres

Then proceed to select the pump (drainage or sewage) that has a maximum head capability of a least 7 metres (to provide a reasonable extra capacity).

Do I need a non-return valve?

Yes

Do I need a high level alarm?

It is not mandatory but recommended.

Are the pumps covered by a warranty?

Yes, between 1 and 2 years
